What is The Ancestor Effect
We all know it’s exciting and fun to know where we came from, but why is it important for us to know the stories of our ancestors?
So, get this, a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, shows that knowing the stories of your ancestors and just THINKING about them can help you. The study showed that college students who thought about or wrote about a story of one of their ancestors for 5 minutes before an exam performed significantly better on a range of intelligence tests (including verbal and spatial tasks). They also ranked higher in questionnaires of perceived life control and confidence in their ability to perform well.
“We showed that an easy reminder about our ancestors can significantly increase intellectual performance,” the researchers said. “Hence, whenever people are in a situation where intellectual performance is extraordinarily important, for example in exams or job interviews, they have an easy technique to increase their success.”
Are the Stories of My Ancestors Important?
We won’t get into the fascinating world of Epigenetics here, but we will say that these are the people who raised your great-great grandparents, who raised your great grandparents, who raised your grandparents, who raised your parents, who raised you. We will get into a little nature vs. nurture here. Not only did they pass down the DNA that produced your red hair and blue eyes, that great-great grandmother taught your great-grandmother how to cut a watermelon, how to sew, how to respond to difficult situations. And, along with the influence of many in your family tree, are part of who you are!
When we learn of the people we came from overcoming difficulty, having a sense of humor, or experiencing life in all it’s glory – we gain confidence in our own abilities to do the same. They are a part of us!
