Is your closet full of clothes you no longer wear? Do yo have anything in your closet you don’t LOVE?! Is there anything that is worn out or out of style?! I think it’s time we clean out our closets!! And not just your clothes closet but your linen and coat closet. But first, let’s do your clothes. This use to be a daunting task for me and I’d always find a reason to keep the clothes. Until one day I did a complete marathon purge session with my closet. I took out every pice of clothing item I had and was blown away as I counted each top. It helped me see just how many of clothes I had. Keep in mind, the more you purge, the easier it gets! So let’s start!
Clothes Closet. I’m sure most of you have heard of the Marie Kondo method of “the life-changing magic of tidying up” oh how this was a life changing thing for me. I know it sounds totally silly, but when she says to ask yourself “does this bring you joy” it really did change my mind set. I’m now looking at a shirt thinking, “ya its still super cute, I should keep this one.” and then I ask that question and think, “does this bring me joy? no… actually it doesn’t, I hate that why the fabric feels.” Even though its still super cute and in style, I find I don’t wear it because I hate the way it feels on my skin. Instead of feeling guilty for getting rid of it, be grateful that you’ve learned you don’t like that fabric. It really helped me in the process and I ended up getting rid of 30%-40% of my tops. It makes me so much more aware when I buy something new if I really love it enough to take up space in my closet.
keep a donation sack in your closet. When I come across a shirt I decide I don’t love anymore, instead of hanging it back up, you need an exit strategy. If a bag is sitting there ready to toss in, you will more likely do it. It also keeps your closet clean from extra piles of clothes on the floor.
Linen Closet. There are so many ways you can make this space function and I am going to let you in on a few things I like to do with my linen closet. Have you seen those over the door shoe organizer? I love those to hold cleaning supplies, lotions, extra tooth paste, shampoo and conditioner.. any products that I normally put in my linen closet, I now put in this shoe holder. I love that I can see everything I have, it saves me from over purchasing items I think I need to later discover them in a bottom of a bin.
I love bins! I keep all my hand towels in a bin on a shelf. It looks more organized that sitting on a shelf.
Take an evaluation of what’s in your linen closet.. does it belong there? Often times you may place something somewhere and over time you find that it shouldn’t be there in the first place. If there are any items that don’t fit the category of the linen closet, find a new home for it.
my favorite saying is, “a place for everything and everything in its place.’ If you have a place for everything, it’s much easier to keep things tidy and organized.
The Coat Closet. The best thing I ever did was hang hooks in my coat closet. My kids would never realistically hang their coats and most of them couldn’t reach the hanger in the first place. All along the back I hung hooks and let me tell you, it’s the best! My kids have a place for their backpacks and coats. On the floor I put fabric bins lined up so they had a place for their shoes. As for my kids, it wasn’t realistic to have them line up their shoes on some shelf, so I did what would work for my kids. Opening the door and tossing them into their bin was an easy and functional thing for us.
