Get your kids involved. The more often you do this, the easier it will get for your kids to get rid of stuff. I remind my kids that they will continue to have birthdays and Christmas, not to mention earning their own money they can use on toys if they choose to. My toys are in the family room in my basement and I try to organize and declutter about every 6 months or so. If not, then my family room starts look unorganized. in this blog post I have found some great organizing ideas for playrooms.
HOW TO ORGANIZE KIDS TOYS
Kids playrooms are so much fun and kids love them.. IF they can walk in the room ha ha! Let’s fix that so you enjoy being in that space as well! Here are simple steps to follow to make it easier for you!
STEP 1 | MAKE 4 DIFFERENT PILES
1ST | Donate
Try to pay attention to what your kids play with and what they DON’T play with. Point out to them the toys they don’t play with. I use the Marie Kondo method with my kids. After I read the Marie Kondo book, I applied the method, “does this bring me joy” and I am always surprised at how much it helps by phrasing it that way. So I ask them, “does this really bring you joy?” Sure enough it helps them too!
2ND | Trash
How many of your toys are broken or have missing parts? Toss them! Kids aren’t going to play with broken toys if it has missing parts. I know this might be hard if they once loved it, but realize it’s not the same as it once was and throw it in the trash pile.
3RD | Keep
This pile is the toys your kids love to play with and play with them often.
4TH | Store
Do you have baby toys but your youngest isn’t a baby anymore BUT you might have another? Store those baby toys for when you do have your next baby. There’s no reason to have those baby toys take up space if they aren’t being played with. Or if you have toys that your kids have out grown and they are for younger children, store them away for your next child.
HOW TO ORGANIZE KIDS TOYS
Now that you have gone through your toys and got ride of a lot of them, let’s talk about storing the toys! Look at your space to see if you need any more containers, shelving, or bins. There are many cheap playroom organization ideas you can do. Organizing a playroom on a budget is possible, in fact, The Dollar Tree even has some bins and organizing supplies for only $1. You can always start there and work your way up and upgrade as you go.
PLAYROOM ORGANIZATION TIPS
These are some simple tips that have helped me over the years to be more successful in keeping my kids playroom organized.
Storage organization
Try to keep as much as you can in storage containers. Cubicles work great, baskets, or totes. The more you have in bin, the prettier it will look.
Rotate toys
Is there too many toys for your space but you can’t quit part with them? You can try rotating your toys. Check to see if you have any extra space in your storage room, shed, or closet. Grab a bin and put any extra toys you can fit in there. After 6 months take those toys out, your kids will feel like it’s Christmas again with the excitement of “new” toys or the toys they missed. Fill it back up with other toys and put it away. This is a great way to keep the toys fresh and to also see which toys they truly love. If they aren’t really excited about it after it being gone for 6 months, then you know it’s time to put it in the donate pile.
DO or DON’T label all your bins?
Labeling all your bins works for some and not others. When you label a bin with “cars” and kids are cleaning up and don’t put the cars in the right bin, it might cause more stress than skipping the label all together. If you want to try to label them, give it a shot. If all the toys are all mixed up soon after, then I would bag the idea of labeling all the bins. Depending on the age of kids, it can be hard to maintain. See what works best for you!
In Conclusion
Keep only the toys that get played with. Donate every 6 months or so to stay on top of it. If you have room, rotate your toys to keep them fresh. And I hope you have fun organizing your kids toys, it’s the best feeling when it’s all done! It’s the best feeling to have a place for everything and everything in it’s place. In turn it gives you more space to breathe and relax!
